Venture Center does not run one common application; each track and scheme has its own form and contact.

• Have an idea but no company yet: apply to pre-incubation (Ignition or Kickstart).
• Have a research result at an academic or public lab: contact the Lab2Mkt team about spinning it out.
• Are a research-based company not based in Pune: look at virtual incubation (the Associate Incubatee Program).
• Want office or lab space on the Pune campus: apply for resident incubation.
• Are raising your next round: check whether the Investor Readiness Program has an open cohort.
• Need machines, not just money: most of Protoshop's labs, the cleanroom and the Cell Studio can be booked directly, incubatee or not.

How selection works

• Pre-incubation distinguishes two categories: pre-incorporation teams committed to founding a startup, and young startups under three years old that are technology-focused and knowledge-intensive. A provisional patent filing is preferred but not always required.
• Virtual incubation is selective: Venture Center checks that the business is research-based and aligned with the NCL Innovation Park's innovation theme, alongside ethics and stage considerations. It is not open to resident incubatees.
• The Investor Readiness Program runs a five-phase process: onboarding with a refundable commitment fee, a diagnostic review of investor readiness, work on the business case and pitch deck, and a final showcase where startups pitch to a panel of investors.
• Lab2Mkt works in three stages, and Venture Center takes an equity stake in the spin-off it helps create, in exchange for carrying the technology, market and team risk through those stages.

What to have ready

• For pre-incubation and Lab2Mkt: a clear technology or invention, ideally with a provisional patent filed, and a founding team committed to building a company around it.
• For resident incubation: a sense of whether you need dedicated office space, a lab module with fume hoods, or a hot desk, since the packages differ.
• For the Investor Readiness Program: a clear sense of how much you want to raise and a willingness to commit a few hours a week to mentoring over several months.
• For grants and fellowships: check the scheme's own theme first. NIDHI-PRAYAS is for idea-stage physical products, the Biotechnology Ignition Grant is biotech-specific, and CSR grants each carry the funding corporate's own thematic focus.

How to apply

• Pre-incubation, virtual incubation and resident incubation each have a 'Join Now' or 'Apply Now' form on their own page.
• For Lab2Mkt, write to the Lab2Mkt team directly rather than filling a form.
• For funding schemes, start from the Funding Database on the site, which filters opportunities for you, or go to the specific scheme's page.
• For prototyping, cleanroom or analytical work, book directly through Protoshop, the Medtech Cleanroom or the Center for Biopharma Analysis pages, even if you are not an incubatee.

Venture Center is a not-for-profit technology business incubator in Pune, hosted by CSIR's National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) on its 100-acre Innovation Park. Registered legally as Entrepreneurship Development Center, it is sector agnostic but concentrates on science-based technologies in health and rehabilitation, energy and environment, engineering and automation, and agriculture and nutrition.

How programmes work

There is no single funnel here; a founder picks a track. Pre-incubation, through Ignition and Kickstart, works with early technology projects that have not yet become a company, sharpening the value proposition and the proof-of-concept plan before helping raise POC funding. Virtual incubation, through the Associate Incubatee Program, supports research-based companies that are not physically on campus, mainly through its Eklavya advisory and library membership route and the INCLUDE social-enterprise track. Resident incubation puts a startup on the NCL Innovation Park campus with dedicated office or lab space.

On top of these tracks sit named programmes. Lab2Mkt is the flagship route for academic and public-lab researchers: a three-stage process moving from technology and IP due diligence through raising seed funds and beta-customer engagement to a detailed business plan and Series A fundraising, with Venture Center taking an equity stake in exchange for the risk it carries. The Investor Readiness Program is a 24-week cohort that prepares startups to raise their next round, ending in a startup showcase where they pitch to investors. The Leap Global Program is a six-month, equity-free accelerator for deep-tech startups in healthcare, environment and sustainability aiming to go global. The BioIncubator, supported by DBT-BIRAC, nurtures biotechnology and biomedical ventures and hosts several of the schemes below. The Early Translation Accelerator has run funded calls that move academic discoveries from early technology readiness toward validated, industry-ready technologies.

Funding routes fall into three kinds: fellowships (the Social Innovation Immersion Program, the NIDHI Entrepreneur-in-Residence program, and the BFI-BIOME Fellowship), grants (NIDHI-PRAYAS for idea-stage prototyping, the Biotechnology Ignition Grant for early-stage biotech, and CSR grants funded by corporate partners on a thematic call basis), and seed investment, where Venture Center makes direct equity investments and also routes several government seed schemes such as the BIRAC SEED Fund, the BIRAC LEAP Fund, and the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme.

Who can apply

Eligibility varies by track and scheme, but the pattern across pre-incubation, Lab2Mkt and the fellowships is a preference for technology or knowledge-based teams with a scientific or research origin, often before they have registered a company. Resident incubation and the funding schemes are open more broadly, including registered startups, MSMEs and academic spinouts, subject to each scheme's own criteria. Virtual incubation is explicitly not open to resident incubatees, and its research-based eligibility bar is checked case by case.

Facilities

Venture Center's prototyping arm, Protoshop, runs six named labs. The Rapid Prototyping Lab has 3D printers, 3D scanners, a CO2 laser cutter and a cutting plotter. The Design & Simulation Lab carries a full ANSYS simulation suite alongside SOLIDWORKS and MATLAB & Simulink licenses. The Electronics Lab has oscilloscopes, function generators, a PCB plotter, a rework station and an impedance analyzer. The Processing Lab covers micro injection moulding, ovens, a muffle furnace, a hydraulic press, a ball mill and an ethylene oxide steriliser. The Optics Lab & Dark Room has UV and NIR spectrometers, a research spectrofluorometer and an optical table. The Mechanical Fab Lab has a vertical machining centre, a lathe, a CNC router and a vertical drill. A separate Rupee Centre carries paper and soft-materials pilot equipment such as a two-roll mill and a sheet former.

Beyond Protoshop, Venture Center runs a Medtech Cleanroom with ISO Class 7, 8 and 9 areas (and an ISO Class 5 laminar-flow zone), ISO 13485 certified, for manufacturing and packaging medical devices. Its Center for Biopharma Analysis is NABL accredited to ISO 17025:2017 and characterises biologics and biosimilars using techniques such as Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry, surface plasmon resonance and SEC-RI-MALS. Its Cell Studio, part of the BioIncubator, runs confocal microscopy, flow cytometry and mechanical testing for cell and tissue-engineering work. A separate set of R&D support labs covers simple cell-growth and molecular-biology studies, lab-scale chemistry and low-temperature storage. An analytical-services catalogue on top of these covers chromatography, elemental analysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, thermal analysis and particle-size analysis. On the infrastructure side, incubatees get dedicated office space, dedicated lab modules with fume hoods, and hot-desking, plus meeting rooms and event space. Venture Center also runs a 112 kWp rooftop solar installation on campus.

Support services

Alongside the labs, Venture Center runs an in-house Technology Transfer Office, branded TechEx.in, that helps technology developers and commercialisation partners find each other, structure deals and manage IP agreements. Its Regulatory Information and Facilitation Center, run jointly with BIRAC, helps MedTech and FoodTech startups plan and secure regulatory approvals across the Indian, European and US markets, including ISO 13485 implementation and clinical-trial planning. A separate IP services desk handles drafting, filing and prosecution of patents and other IP. Business and branding consulting, including logo design and website development, rounds out the services on offer.

Track record

On its own pages, Venture Center reports supporting more than 1,100 startup teams to date, with 85 percent of resident startups still active and 55 percent having at least one woman co-founder. It counts more than 250 unique patent families among its startups and a mentor network of more than 200 people. Its history page marks 2025 as the year it crossed 1,000 startup teams supported, and 2023-24 as the year it first hosted 100 resident incubatees at once. Under its BIRAC-supported Seed Fund programme specifically, it reports 74 unique startups supported, 31 co-investments, 28 women-led startups, 11 spin-offs from research labs and 103 products commercialised. Awards recorded on its pages include the National Award for Technology Business Incubation, the AABI Incubator of the Year award, the National Entrepreneurship Award, the National Intellectual Property Award for Nurturing IP, and recognition as the top-ranked bioincubator in Biospectrum's annual survey.

Who runs it

Venture Center's Founding Director is Dr. Premnath Venugopalan, and its Chief Operating Officer is Dr. Manisha Premnath. Its board has nine members, chaired by the Director of CSIR-NCL, and includes entrepreneurs, investors and former government and industry officials. It publishes open roles on a careers page and runs a regular calendar of workshops, masterclasses and networking events on its NCL Innovation Park campus in Pune.
