How to apply to TIDES, IIT Roorkee

Pick the right route in

TIDES runs one core incubation programme plus several funding schemes layered on top, so start with what you actually need:

General technology incubation: apply to TIDES TBI Incubation.
Life sciences or med-tech, from idea to product: apply to BIRAC BioNEST.
You need prototype or seed money and are open to any qualifying scheme: look at TIDE 2.0, the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, NIDHI PRAYAS, or NIDHI EIR, depending on your sector and stage.
You're a student or very early founder wanting orientation first: NEENV or the TIDES Ignition Program (TIP) are workshop-style entry points before a full incubation application.
You build for defence, oil & gas, or agritech: iDEX, Engineers India Limited's EngSUI, and the HDFC Bank Venture Capital Program are the sector-specific routes.

How applications work

Applications for TIDES TBI Incubation and BIRAC BioNEST are open round the year — there is no fixed deadline, and both use an online Accubate form.
If you apply as an individual rather than a registered company, you must register a legal entity within three months of being selected.
Several government schemes (TIDE 2.0, NIDHI PRAYAS, NIDHI EIR) route through TIDES but are ultimately governed by their own scheme rules — check the specific eligibility (citizenship, education, age, shareholding) before applying.
Some listed schemes, such as HDFC Bank Parivartan SmartUp Grants, NIDHI SSS and iDEX's cited round, were shown as closed as of this review — check the live programme page for the current call before assuming it is open.

What reviewers look for

A validated problem, not just an idea. TIDES TBI Incubation explicitly expects founders who show a bias for action and a clear grasp of the problem.
Indian citizenship and, for most schemes, Indian ownership. Several routes require at least 51% Indian promoter shareholding, and TIDE 2.0 requires the applicant to be an Indian citizen without another income source.
A legal-entity plan. TIDES accepts pre-registration individuals for its core TBI track but expects incorporation within three months of selection.
Fit with the scheme's sector, not just TIDES' general remit. BioNEST is life-sciences and med-tech only; EngSUI is oil and gas only; the HDFC Bank Venture Capital Program favours agritech.

Before you apply

Have your documents ready. Nationality proof, and for company applicants, registration and shareholding details, are asked for across most schemes.
Check whether the round accepts individuals or only registered startups — this differs by scheme (TBI incubation takes individuals; several funding schemes require the startup to already be a registered incubatee).
Don't stack support silently. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme specifically caps how much prior government support you can have received before applying.

About TIDES, IIT Roorkee

TIDES stands for Technology Innovation and Development of Entrepreneurship Society, the technology business incubator hosted at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. It runs from the TIDES Business Incubator in the Hafiz Ibrahim Building on the IIT Roorkee campus, and also operates BioNEST, a separate bio-incubator facility on the Multi-Activity Center's 2nd and 3rd floors, plus a campus in Greater Noida. TIDES is the flagship technology business incubator (TBI) of the National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), under the Department of Science and Technology.

Who runs it

The Governing Body is chaired by Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, with Azam Ali Khan as CEO and Member Secretary. The executive team includes a manager who supports incubation activities and technological mentorship, an analyst who manages funding and accelerator programmes, a coordinator for iDEX-DIO and SIDBI defence work, and a coordinator for MeitY's GENESIS and TIDE initiatives.

What they support

TIDES admits individual innovators and registered startups working on technology-based ideas; an individual who is selected must register a company within three months. It is sector-agnostic at the core TBI, though its BioNEST track is limited to life sciences and med-tech, and several of its funding routes carry their own sector focus: agriculture (HDFC Bank Venture Capital Program), oil and gas (Engineers India Limited's EngSUI), and defence and aerospace (iDEX). Applicants must generally be Indian citizens, and startups typically need at least 51% Indian promoter shareholding to qualify for the government-backed schemes it channels.

TIDES TBI Incubation is its core, ongoing incubation programme: open applications year-round through an online form, with no fixed deadline. Selected founders get infrastructural, legal, accounting and IPR support, technical lab access, mentoring, networking and a startup toolkit.

BIRAC BioNEST is TIDES' bio-incubation track, supported by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council. It takes entrepreneurs in life sciences and med-tech from an idea or proof of concept to a commercial venture, over six months to three years, with the same rolling application process.

Alongside incubation, TIDES channels several government and bank-backed funding schemes to its startups: MeitY's TIDE 2.0 grant and Entrepreneur-in-Residence tracks for ICT and biotech ideas; the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme for proof-of-concept, prototyping and market entry; NIDHI PRAYAS for hardware prototype funding; NIDHI EIR as a fellowship for aspiring entrepreneurs; NIDHI SSS as seed support for its own incubatees; iDEX for defence and aerospace innovation; Engineers India Limited's EngSUI for oil and gas innovation, in phases from proof-of-concept support up to direct equity funding; and two HDFC Bank programmes, one a venture capital route for agritech and allied sectors, the other a Parivartan-backed grant for startups in social-impact themes such as environment, healthcare and education (this HDFC Parivartan round is currently closed).

On the training and networking side, NEENV is a startup-orientation programme for students, running expert-led sessions and site visits into TIDES' incubated ventures. SAKSHI is a knowledge-sharing initiative that brings industry leaders, investors, policymakers and academics together with early-stage founders, ending in a closed-door pitching session for a shortlist of startups. The TIDES Ignition Program (TIP) is an ideation-stage workshop covering entrepreneurial mindset, design thinking, market research, MVP development, business model design, startup finance and pitch preparation, ending in a demo day in front of an expert jury.

Facilities

TIDES' facilities page names two lab tracks: the TIDES TBI lab, described as an IoT-equipped facility, and the BioNEST lab, described as carrying industrial equipment for bio-incubation. Neither page names individual instruments. The BioNEST facility publishes a price list for outside users, alongside the mentoring and networking access all incubatees get.
