Greenovator Incubation Foundation (GIF), NIT Srinagar

Overview

Greenovator Incubation Foundation (GIF) is a Section-8 company hosted at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir. It is Kashmir's first technology business incubation centre and India's first incubator dedicated to green technologies. GIF operates as an Inclusive Technology Business Incubator (i-TBI) supported by the National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) at the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Focus Areas

GIF concentrates on three green-technology pillars:

• AgriTech — horticulture, floriculture, food processing, animal husbandry, dairy
• EnviroTech — solutions tackling water, air, and ecological pollution
• AlterTech — clean-tech innovations driving industrial modernization and renewables

Programs & Support

The flagship offering is the Ignition Grant programme, run as annual cohorts. Selected startups receive non-dilutive grant funding (typically up to ₹5 lakh) plus incubation space at NIT Srinagar, mentoring from faculty and industry experts, prototyping support in NIT's labs, and access to the DST NIDHI ecosystem (NIDHI-EIR, NIDHI-PRAYAS, Seed Support System). Under Cohort 2.0, GIF awarded ignition grants to 10 emerging startups.

Eligibility

Open to early-stage founders — particularly first-time and rural entrepreneurs from Jammu & Kashmir and the wider Himalayan region — building green-economy solutions. Both incorporated startups and idea-stage innovators can apply, with priority for ventures with on-ground prototypes or pilot deployments.

Why It Matters

GIF is one of the very few incubators in Kashmir and the only one with a dedicated green-tech mandate, making it an entry point for J&K founders into India's national startup ecosystem and DST funding instruments.
