What is the PRIP scheme's main objective?

The PRIP scheme aims to transform India's Pharma–MedTech sector from a cost-based industry into an innovation-driven global powerhouse for R&D, enabling rapid discovery, development, and commercialization of drugs and medical devices.

Who is eligible to apply for PRIP Call 2?

Eligible applicants include MSMEs and DPIIT-recognized startups that are registered in India as companies (excluding OPCs and Section 8 companies), LLPs, or registered partnership firms. Ecosystem enablers may also submit on behalf of promising projects or entities within their network.

What kind of projects are supported by PRIP?

PRIP supports projects in new medicines (including new chemical and biological entities, gene/cell therapy, phytopharmaceuticals, and traditional Indian medicines), complex generics & biosimilars, and novel medical devices (including AI/ML, SaMD/SiMD, genetic diagnostics, surgical robotics, telemedicine devices, and novel IVDs).

What are the funding amounts available?

Financial assistance is provided up to ₹5 crore for Early Stage Projects, up to ₹50 crore for NCE/NBE Discovery Track, and up to ₹100 crore for Later Stage Projects.

Is co-funding required for projects under PRIP?

Yes, co-funding is required. For Early Stage projects requesting over ₹1 crore, 50% co-funding is needed. For NCE/NBE Discovery Track, a minimum of 25% co-funding from a bona fide institutional investor is mandatory.

How is funding disbursed and what are the terms of engagement?

Funding is disbursed in four milestone-linked instalments into a dedicated project bank account. Upon commercialization, there is a benefit-share agreement on net sales, or alternatively, share allotment through Compulsory Convertible Preference Shares (CCPS) as preferred.

What are the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) requirements?

Early Stage projects must have completed TRL 1, 2, or 3, aiming to reach up to TRL 5. Later Stage projects should have completed TRL 4, 5, or 6, aiming for higher TRLs. Projects already at TRL 7 or above are not eligible.

The Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma–MedTech Sector (PRIP) scheme, launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India, is a flagship initiative designed to transform India's Pharma–MedTech industry.
